Tomato Dal CurryIngredients for preparing Tomato Dal Curry

  • Tomatoes -chopped  - 6  nos.
  • Toor Dal  -  ¾  cup
  • Small Onion / Shallot  -  5  nos.
  • Chilli Powder  -  1½  tsp
  • Turmeric Powder  -  ½   tsp
  • Grated Coconut  - 1½  cup
  • Green Chillies -  4  nos.
  • Coconut Oil  -   1½  tbsp
  • Mustard Seeds -  1  tsp
  • Curry Leaves  -  2  stalks

Steps for preparing Tomato Dal Curry

  1. Wash and soak dal in water for 10 to 15 minutes.
  2. Cook dal in a pressure cooker by adding enough water for 2 to 3 whistles until soft.
  3. In between grind coconut and small onions together into smooth paste and keep aside.
  4. Once the dal is cooked drain the excess water; smash dal using a wooden spatula, and add in chopped tomatoes and green chillies. Mix well.
  5. Then add chilli powder, turmeric powder and salt. Saute for few minutes.
  6. Mix the ground mixture with sauteed dal and let it boil. Add some water if the consistency is very thick.
  7. Heat oil in a pan, splutter mustard seeds and curry leaves. Add this seasoning to the dal curry.
  8. Serve hot.
