Punjabi Dal TadkaIngredients for preparing Punjabi Dal Tadka

  • Yellow Lentils / toor dal – 1 cup
  •  Onion: chopped  – 1 no.
  •  Tomatoes – 2
  •  Dried red Chilli – 2
  •  Ginger – 2 piece
  •  Garlic: minced – 2 cloves
  •  Turmeric powder – ½ tsp
  •  Salt to taste – ½ tsp
  •  Lemon juice to taste – ½ tsp
  •  Ghee – 1 tbsp
  •  Cumin seeds – ½ tsp
  •  Mustard Seeds – 1 tsp
  •  Asafoetida – ¼ tsp
  •  Curry Leaves – 2 stalks
  •  Coriander leaves -1 stalk
  • Oil – 1  tbsp

Steps for preparing Punjabi Dal Tadka

  1. Wash the dal well in cold water.
  2. Heat 1 tbsp of ghee in a saucepan; add onion and garlic, saute well about 2 to 3 minutes. Add salt and turmeric powder.
  3. Then add the chopped tomatoes and saute for another 2 minutes.
  4. Now add the lentils along with 3 cups of water and bring to a boil. Cook covered, when it is almost done reduce the flame and cook till it is fully cooked.
  5. In another pan, heat oil; add mustard seeds and when they start spluttering, add the cumin seeds, ginger, dried red chillies, asafoetida powder and curry leaves.
  6. Add this seasoning to the dal and mix well; switch off the stove. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with paratha or chapati.
