Chettinad Mixed Dal VadaIngredients for Chettinad Mixed Dal Vadai

  • Chana Dal(Pottu Kadala)  -  1 cup
  • Moong Dal(Cherupayar Parippu)  -  ½ cup
  • Spinach: chopped  -  1½  cup
  • Dry Red Chillies  -  3 nos.
  • Cumin Seeds  - 1  tsp
  • Fennel Seeds(Perumjeerakam) -  ½  tsp
  • Onion :chopped -  1 cup
  • Green Chillies: chopped  - 3 nos.
  • Minced Ginger -   1 tbsp
  • Oil for deep frying -  1 cup
  • Salt to taste -  ½ tsp

Steps for preparing Chettinad Mixed Dal Vadai

  1. Wash both varieties of dal together. Soak them in 2 cups of water for 2-3 hours. Drain the water completely.
  2. Put both varieties of  dal in a blender or food processor with red chillies, cumin seeds, fennel seeds and 1/2 cup of water. Grind to make a thick, coarse batter.
  3. Transfer the batter to a large bowl, add the remaining ingredients, except the oil. Mix thoroughly.
  4. Make small balls out of the batter . Flatten with your fingers in to a round patty, about 1″ in diameter. Make maximum number of vadai with the remaining batter in the same way.
  5. Heat the oil in a skillet. Drop a few vadai at a time in to the oil and fry till both sides turn golden brown. Do not crowd the skillet. Remove from oil with a perforated spatula and drain on paper towels.
  6. Serve hot with tomato sauce
